ROCKER BEATER LOOM #16: THE PENNINGTON FAMILY LOOM

Loom located at the Heritage Farm Museum and Village, Huntington, WV

At Left: Wide view of front-right side of loom. The loom has a weaver's bench built into the frame.

At Right: Detailed view of rocker. The lower end of the leg is shaped like a dagger, extending through the rocker and projecting out the bottom. It inserts into a rectangular hole in a platform at the side of the loom.

This loom was purchased by a loom collector in the early 1960s, from a Mr. Pennington (age 90 at the time) of Grayson, Kentucky.  He said it was his grandmother's loom, and had been built around 1820.

The collector was in her early 80s when she contacted me.  She had around 20 looms - including a floor-to-ceiling tapestry loom for weaving large wall hangings. The Pennington loom had been in a backyard shed for years. We put it up so I could take pictures for the loom study, and she didn't want to put it back in the damp shed.  She insisted I take it until an appropriate home could be found for it, so for a number of additional years it was in storage at my home.  Recently her son contacted me, with regards to the loom and its possible placement in the Heritage Farm Museum.
