At Right: View of front-left side of loom. Front posts, breast beam in foreground. Beater to the left and rear of front left post. Rockers are kept in place using the hole and peg method. There are three pegs in a small wooden block attached to the side of the loom base, and corresponding holes in the underside of the rocker. Visible at the back of picture is the warp beam and brake system, consisting of a metal pawl and ratchet. This loom was purchased by the current owner, from a neighbor, when she learned it was going to be destroyed. It is now in storage in her barn. |
The loom is reported to have been originally owned by the Waskom family, one of Jackson County Indiana's earliest families. The family is known to have owned and operated a ferry in the area. The Waskom family loom is estimated to have been built around 1850. |
