ROCKER BEATER LOOM#47: THE BRISTOL VIRGINIA/TENNESSEE LOOM COLLECTION

This collection is now located at The Exchange Place in Kingsport, TN

Loom #47. Wide view, left side of loom.  Loom is fitted for a weaver's bench but the bench board is missing, as is the shedding system.

Detail view of "dagger and special platform" methed of keeping rockers in place on loom base. The platforms on this loom differ from those on the other loom in the collection (#46), in that they are broader in width and there is also a wooden pin in the center of both dagger slots (purpose unknown).

The two looms in this collection are similar in size, but are not identical. They may (or may not) have been built by the same person, but are definitely of the same type. This loom has rough-hewn finish, so may be the older of the two.

The original owners of this collection are now deceased, and the name of the original family is no longer known.
The photographs of this loom were taken after the collection was moved to The Exchange Place.  At present the barn shown here is being used as storage, but it is eventually to be divided and developed into two sections: one for the exibition of the museum's extensive collection of antique fabrics and home textile tools, and the other to provide space for a variety of seasonal activities, such as the demonstration of 19th century domestic skills and various educational, hands-on activities for children.
