ROCKER BEATER LOOM #6: THE ANDREW WATSON LOOM

In storage at the Kentucky Historical Society, Frankfort, Kentucky

At Left: Wide view of left side of loom. Note cloth beam brake system inside loom frame on right-hand side.

Rocker is held in place on base of loom with an extended projection and hole arrangement. Beater leg has a round extension at the lower extremity, which projects through a hole in rocker (fastening rocker to leg) and extends beyond the bottom of rocker by about an inch. The rounded end of the extension fits into a corresponding hole in base of loom.

This loom is from Louisa, in eastern Kentucky. The loom was donated to the museum by the great-granddaughter of Mary Smith, who died in 1948 at the age of 97.

The loom was built by Mary's father, Andrew Watson, who migrated from Shenandoah Virginia, through southwestern part of the state and into Kentucky, during the mid-1800s.  Many of the family antiques (including the loom) were later sold, during hard times, and Mary spent her later years buying them back.
